History of Coweta, Oklahoma
Coweta, Oklahoma is a small town located in Wagoner County, and has a long and rich history. The area was originally inhabited by the Creek Nation, who named it “Cowita” which translates to “a place of refuge”. In 1829, the United States government signed a treaty with the Creek Nation which opened up the area for settlement by non-natives.
In 1844, the first settlers arrived in Coweta and began to farm cotton, corn and other crops in the fertile soil. By 1892, Coweta had grown into an incorporated town with its own post office and railroad station.
