I Forgot My Windows Phone Password. What to Do?

Windows Phone may have the screen locked by password, as a means of security that protects your device and its information. Only the person who knows the password can use the device. But it may happen that the person who owns the cell phone forgot the password of the device. And if this has happened, there’s no need to go into despair: you have a few options to recover your device.

I Forgot My Windows Phone Password. What to Do

I forgot my Windows Phone password: be warned!

There have been several of our readers who have forgotten the Windows Phone password. And many of them did not even have a Microsoft account to help with password recovery or backup of device data.

If you read the manual or follow the instructions on your device the first time you connect it, it will suggest you to make the Microsoft account or use an existing one. Also enable automatic backup of the contacts, at least. And as soon as you make a password for the lock screen, write it down in a place you know how to keep. Extra care will save you a lot of headaches later.

I forgot my Windows Phone password: starting the solutions

Typically, you set up your Microsoft Live, Hotmail, or Outlook account in the first Windows Phone setup . In these accounts, as we speak, you have to enable automatic contact backup. Unfortunately, you can not use your username and password to unlock your Windows Phone screen. You have to correct the password to unlock the screen by the device itself, and you can not do this by “outside” the device.

To unlock the screen, you have to reset your phone to the factory settings to unlock the screen. There is no other way to reset the lock screen password in Windows Phone, unfortunately.

WARNING: Using these methods, if you did not activate automatic data backup, you will lose data, photos, videos, SMS, WiFi passwords, and everything else you had on your phone. With a backup in the cloud , you can restore the data to your device after restarting. We warned you: no one told you not to follow the manual and screen instructions when you first turned on your device.

I forgot my Windows Phone password: hard reset

This method returns your phone to factory settings.

Turn off your device using the on / off button. Press and hold the minus volume (-) button and connect the charger to the phone. You will see a large exclamation point on the screen. Press the following keys in order: plus volume (+), volume (-), on / off, volume (-). The phone will have suffered the hard reset and will restart normally, and you will see some gears on the screen.

When you redo the password, note it somewhere you will not forget it.

Using Find My Phone to give hard reset on your Windows Phone

Through the Find My Phone, you can use the “delete” tool remotely. Just do this through the Microsoft website.

There, select Windows Phone -> Find my phone’s main and log in with your Microsoft, Hotmail, Xbox, or Outlook account that you used in Windows Phone, all from your computer. You will see the option to delete the phone, and Microsoft will send an SMS message to delete your device. This only works if you have the push notifications turned on in the device settings, find my phone option, send apps to my phone using push notifications. This can all be done over a WiFi network, without the need for 3G or 4G connection

In both methods, you will need to reconfigure the phone. If your device still has problems, we recommend that you take it to a Windows Phone authorized service center to unlock your device.
