ADSL

Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. Technology that improves the bandwidth of conventional wireless telephone wiring that carries up to 16 Mbps (megabits per second) through a series of compression methods.

AdWords

System Google of advertising text or graphics, which usually appear on the right side of the screen of search results. They can also appear on the network of websites that are affiliated with Google AdSense.

AGP

Accelerated Graphics Port. It is a specification of bus that provides a direct connection between the graphics adapter and memory.

AIFF

English Audio Interchange File Format (audio file format Exchangeable), audio file format co-developed by Apple Computer. It is used to store sampleos high quality audio.

Ajax

Asynchronous JavaScript And XML . It is a web development technique for creating interactive web applications.

Alexa

Alexa is a service that collects information from millions of people and their daily Internet browsing. These people have installed on your computer, your browser preferably a Alexa toolbar, and it is by this means that Alexa collects anonymously, much statistical information using the Web.

Algorithm

Word comes from the name of the Arab mathematician Al-Khwarizmi (780-850 approx.). Defines the set of instructions used to perform a task or solve a problem. Search engines use algorithms to display search results.

Alias

Nickname or pseudonym. usually short and easy to remember which is used instead usually long and difficult to memorize name name.

Primary storage

The memory gives the processor temporary storage for programs and data. All programs and data must be transferred to the memory from an input device or from secondary storage ( CD , DVD , etc), before the programs can be executed or processed data.

Secondary storage

Secondary storage is a medium (such as nonvolatile RAM, but DVD, CD, for example) disposal.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth English. Number of bits that can travel over a physical medium (coaxial cable, twisted pair, fiber optic, etc.) so that the higher the bandwidth the faster the information will be obtained.

ANSI

American National Standards Institute – National Institute of Standards United States.

Defined by the ANSI standard for measuring the brightness of a monitor. The move represents the average value of 9 points on the projected image on the screen.

antivirus

Program aimed at preventing the virus computer and cure existing in a system. These programs should be regularly updated.

Apache HTTP Web server program open source (open source). Its development began in 1995 and is currently one of the most widely used web servers on the network.

API

English Application Programming Interface. Application programming interface. A series of routines used by an application to generally manage low-level services, performed by the operating system of the computer.

Application

Any program that runs on an operating system and do a specific function for a user. For example, word processors, databases, PDAs, etc.

Apple

Company founded in 1976 by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, pioneering technology, which has an extensive line of products like desktop computers and laptops (eg. Macbook Pro, Mac Air), MP3 players (eg. IPod Touch, iPod Nano ), tablet PC (iPad) stores software (app store) and online music (itunes) among others.

applet

Small written in Java which it diffuses through the network in order to run on the client browser.

Archive

File is the equivalent of “file” in English. Is data that has been encoded to be manipulated by a computer. Computer files can be stored on CD-ROM, DVD, hard disk or other storage medium.

ARIN

American Registry of Internet Numbers. US organization that manages the IP addresses of the country, and their assigned territories. Because Internet addresses must be unique, and the Internet address spaces are limited, an organization that controls and assign numerical blocks is required.

ARPANet

Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Precursor of the Internet developed in the late 60’s and early 70’s by the United States Department of Defense as an experiment area network, not centralized, comprehensive and withstand a nuclear war.

Information Architecture

Information Architecture is responsible for making strategic planning prior to creating a website.

ASCII

American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a standard for the code used by computers to represent all uppercase and lowercase letters, Latin letters, numbers, punctuation, etc.

ASF

Advanced Streaming Format This file format stores audio and video information, and was specially designed to work in networks such as the Internet. The information is downloaded as a continuous data stream, and therefore do not need to wait for the complete download the file to play it.

ASP

Acronym for Active Server Pages. Active Server Pages. They are a type of HTML that besides containing the traditional codes and labels, has programs (or scripts) that run on Microsoft Internet Information Server before they are deployed on the user’s screen.

ATA

Advanced Technology Attachment. Interface for connecting hard disk, cdrom, etc. Also it is known as IDE .

ATM

Acronym for Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Asynchronous Transfer Mode. It is a technology of high-speed networks that transmits multiple types of information (voice, video, data) by creating “data packets.

Atom

A protocol for organizing and sharing content. Atom is developed as an improved RSS and will be more complex than successor RSS . Atom will provide support for digital signatures, geographic location of the author and possibly security, encryption and licensing, etc. As RSS, Atom is an XML – based specification.

Information Superhighway

English “Information Highway”. Term coined by former Vice President Al Gore American in 1991 with the aim of defining a communication structure of the future which integrate all types of facilities and services at high speed.

Avatar

In multi – user virtual environments of Internet and games, the avatar is a graphical representation of the user.
